Eejits Guide: final act

So we’ll finish on a more positive note with a final song. The chorus is an old traditional Gaelic one…

‘Ith an bia i’n Bobar agus o aro a ghra’,

(repeat) Say it?

It’s about living in the present – ith an bia, ith an bobar – eat your food and drink your drink, live in the moment, enjoy life. Agus oro a ghra – and whatever you do, don’t forget about loving others. As I say, it’s a traditional chorus, but I think you’ll see it suits exactly here, so it would be great if you could all come in on the chorus. The whole chorus goes like this.

(Sing chorus)

Try it?

Chorus.

Ith an bia i’n Bobar agus oro a ghra,

We’re a people on our way an’ still we haven’t travelled far

Agus ith an bia i’n Bobar agus oro a ghra,

Adam blamed the woman an’ the woman blamed the snake

So St Patrick banned the snakes that we’d have no excuse to make,

Yet men and women blame each other still – it’s never our mistake.

Chorus

Cuchullen fought for Ulster, no surrender until death,

So the Taigs and Prods keep fightin’ on until the dyin’ breath,,

For macho training makes you hard an’ cold an’ arrogant an’ deaf.

Chorus

Macha wanted vengeance for the things that men had done,

So she raged and roared and cursed and swore at every mother’s son

O-oh anger makes you prejudiced and blind to everyone.

Poor oul’ Finn McCool he had a childhood full of strife,

So he plundered an’ he murdered, never listened till his wife

Oh he danced the dance of violence and he missed the point of life.

Chorus

Patrick came to save us from the scourge of fighting wars

But we hijacked and we neutered him and used him for the cause

All wrapped up in green and plastercast to reinforce church laws.

Chorus

The moral of my story, friends, is not so hard to see

Our heroes aren’t such heroes, they can never make us free,

So now instead of blamin’ you I’m best to work on changing me.

Chorus

Oh see the sky, the trees, the flowers, before the evening drops

Slow down, relax, and dance your dance before the music stops

Ay, make the time for fun and friendship now before the music stops.

Chorus.

Ith an bia i’n Bobar agus oro a ghra,

We’re a people on our way an’ still we haven’t travelled far

Agus ith an bia i’n Bobar agus oro a ghra,

Shout hurrah and sing tra-la an’ do the cha-cha through Armagh.

… end …
