Gymnists/Gerry Brown 1

Regular reader Gerry Hobden found a photo in an old newspaper clipping that featured himself and some friends of old.  The quality is poor so I divided the picture in two: the second will follow.

Arthur Murphy, top left, teacher recently retired from St Coleman’s College ..

Gerry Hobden …

Brendan McConville, teacher of St Mary’s High School …

Martin McConville, also a teacher, brother of my friend and regular Paul …

please someone elucidate ! …

Kit Rooney …

Bap McConville ..

Don’t know who ?

(Dorrian Rose tells me that the two missing names are Barney McAlinden (in the middle with the quiff) and (front) Sean Flanagan, formerly of Erskine Place (and Mayobridge) now of Warrenpoint and Principal of St Paul’s, Lurgan.

Please note that nicknames used here were supplied by Gerry Hobden …

Dear Ed disowns all responsibility!

  1. Rose Dorrian. Gerry Hobden wrote that she responded with a couple of names for a photograph which he cited names for omitting several.

Would Rose know of the family of Dorrian’s of past years who were William Dorrian bc. 1863 d. 1902 and Catherine McShane Dorrian Sheeran b. 1869 -d. 1951. Their three children were Hugh b. 1895, Mary b. 1897 and Margaret b. 1900.

The name McShane is derived from Hugh McShane bc. 1821 – d.1891 and Mary Close McShane b. 1831 – d. 1902 (3?) formerly of Fish Quarter (north of Kircubbin) and later from Ballyobegan.

Could Rose be an ancestor of Hugh Dorrian ?

Perhaps you might have further direction for myself on the Surnames of McShane and Close. Who would I go to for research of my two greatgrandparents mother and father ?

    Thank you.

    Bill
