Works of Michael J Murphy

Michael J Murphy worked for almost thirty years for the Irish Folklore Commission and collected 150 volumes of work each 350-700 pages long. This is available for consultation at the Irish Folklore Department of University College Dublin. It’s a pity it’s not yet available on the Internet.

Michael J also wrote six plays all carrying a strong social message : The Hard Man, Culprit of the Shadows, Dust Under our Feet, Men on the Wall, The Loughlin One and The Sell-Out. Some of these were produced in Belfast’s Group Theatre before going on to success in London and Dublin.

Men on the Wall, for example, played the Abbey in Dublin in 1959. It tells the story of a family torn apart by idealism and materialism. One son is involved in smuggling: the other, a committed Republican, considered the greed and commercialism of the former compromised the family’s idealism. Plus ca change!

Michael J also wrote a total of fifty short stories some of which were published in ‘The Rising of Yella Ned and Other Short Stories’ in 1992.

Michael J Murphy was a celebrated writer, folklorist, storyteller, critic, broadcaster, photographer, socialist republican, farm labourer and intellectual : and humble despite all of that.

Other Michael J Murphy Publications include:

At Slieve Gullion’s Foot

Mountain Year

Tyrone Folk Quest

Mountainy Crack

Ulster Folk of Field and Fireside
