Newpoint Ulster Champs 2011

We are delighted to have occasion to once again congratulate Newpoint Players of Newry on winning the Ulster One-Act Play Championship.

The three-woman show of Danielle Slevin (surely daughter of Des and Patricia?) Denise Taylor and Helen Cooper performed ‘Can’t stand up for falling down’ at Ballymoney Town Hall last week.

The multi-talented Paul McParland emerged with the best Director award.

This team has also won the right to compete in the UK Championship which this year will be held in July in Swindon.

Newpoint’s interpretation of the hard-hitting play – which concerns the abuse of women – impressed the judges so much that the three girls were awarded joint best actor awards.

Donal O’Hanlon, Newpoint maestro and sometime Journal correspondent, commented:

‘This is clearly Newpoint’s Year of Women, because Newpoint’s entry this year for the Amateur Drama Festival circuit is Brian Friel’s ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’.

We are optimistic that that too will bring home the gongs!

My heartiest congratulations to Paul and the three ladies and indeed all the team, who have done us all proud.’
