Raymond, I have a few old photographs of the old railway line at Narrow Water Castle. One of the photographs gives a view of Narrow Water halt: the old customs hut and also a little cottage on the other side of the road.
Would this be what you are looking for?
The quality is not particularly great, as they have been scanned from a book that I have. If you would like to have them, and the Editor agrees, then I can E-mail them to you via his good office.

Hi John

Haven't heard from you in a long time, John. I lived in Iveagh Crescent in my younger days. Just looking information regarding my mother's side of the family - Sharpes of Narrow Water. I was looking in particular if someone had photos of the old gate house where my grandmother and grandfather lived. The property was owned by Roger Hall whom my grandfather worked for. All my uncles worked for Haldane Shiels. The black hut was just across the road from the gate house. It was built from railway sleepers for the railway men to store their tools etc. Many a day I went to the black hut and I waited on my father coming down the railway as he would throw off coal for my grandfather for the fire. They were great days and I enjoyed myself mostly down at Narrow Water. If anyone can help in any way regarding photos or history regarding my family. Hope to hear from you soon. Its a fantastic site.

Pete Carr used to gently tell me it was time to go home if he thought I was out too late - he was usually right, and I'd head off round the corner to get a sterner telling off when I got in.

Hi Rebelrouser
thanks for the reply - that's the man. I know there was a family called Carr from around Abbey Yard or Boat Street, so I guess he was related them. In the days before post-traumatic stress, I suppose standing with your mates watching the world go bye was the best form of therapy.

Great to see Robbie Mc Loughlin joining the journal guest book. He and I played for the Abbey and were friends all the way up through school. Robbie the editor can release my email address to you if you want to give me a message.

Yes College Boy I remember the "one legged man", his name was Pete Carr and I think he lived in William Street. He regularly stood with a bunch of guys on Haverns Corner (The Dublin House pub) or MeClellands's corner on William St/ Kilmorey St. Although he had only one leg it did'nt stop him from having long walks down the Warrenpoint Rd.

Hi there
I wanted to know if any of the readers remember either of the following characters.

There was a Mr Duffy from O'Neill Avenue who lived opposite my grandfather (Tom Bole) - I have vague memories of my grandfather telling stories of this Mr Duffy fighting in the Spanish Civil War.

The second character was a survivor of The Great War and had lost his leg - I'm sure his name was Pete and he could often be seen standing with crutches along John Mitchell Place. My grandfather had served in the Royal Navy during the World War I and would often stop to talk to him.

Thanks for the info on the McCrum's. It is possible there is a connection to Albert McCrum, as we have a George Albet McCrum in our lineage. This is all very early 1900's for this family. At least 3 of the girls came to Canada. One married a Carson.

Lorie Begin, there was a family named McCrum that lived in Linenhall Square Newry many years ago. Where they all went to after the old Barracks was pulled down I have no idea, but, there was quite a large family circle with the McCrum family, so there should still be some of them about Newry today.
You can find the Linenhall square McCrum family mentioned here on the Newry Journal at: Reminiscence, Post-war Linenhall People.

Hello I have just been reading the reminiscences and see a Maura Maguire has sent in her memoirs. I know her parents lived on Peter`s Place next door to my mother`s family the Duffy`s. My mother Stella made dresses for her sister Patsy who became Patsy Turley.
I write to her.
I also know a Jim Doherty who still lives on Peter`s Place. He has kindly identified some of my photographs.
My mothers Stella was going out with a Seamus D`Arcy before she met my father. She had cousins called Fearon one of them was killed when hit by a bus whilst home from sea he was very youngabout 19 or 20.. He had borrowed her bicycle at the time. There were also Fagans.
My mother had 2 brothers Tom and Bill. Please if you read this can you get back to me. Maura.

Would love to get in contact with any possible McCrum or Irvine rellies out there. Our McCrum line eventually ended up in Canada in the early 1900's. They were from Newry originally.

Lorie

Dierdre: I don't know if its much help but there was a big family of Lambs living in Mourne view. There was Joseph, Bernard and another brother They also had a sister married to a lad by the name of McFee from up Chapel St. I I have not lived in Newry for many years but I suspect they could still be in that area.

Hi Dierdre, I can remember two brothers named Lamb, Barney and Paddy. Barney had a daughter called Betty and they lived in Greenwood Drive off the Warrenpoint Road. I hope this helps you but that was over forty years ago when I then lived in Newry.
