Dear Editor. Looking at your latest list of Newry recruits - M - I was surprised not to see my Grandfather, Francis Joseph MacMahon, a Newry lad who joined up in October 1914. But then there don't seem to be any Mcs or Macs in your list. Your next instalment, perhaps? Cheers, Phillip.
Catherine Murphy
My father was born and raised outside of Newry - his name is Henry Murphy(Harry) His parents are James and Winnifred and he had a brother John, two sisters Mary and Winnie. He emigrated to Canada in 1956 and was followed later by his brother and sisters. He will be celebrating his 80th birthday this year and his children want to create a book about his life. If anyone there remembers him or has any grand tales to tell about him and his family, I would really appreciate it.

Austin, we have 'emailed' before. I am one of the "Digby's" that used to travel to Cecil St, every school holiday and stay at number 34 Cecil St, were my Aunt Maggie and Peggy Colgan lived. I had many fiends, Peter Mallon, Sean Grant, "The Ferris's","The Mc Quiggins", John Hobden the list goes on. I live now in Sydney, Australia and hope to be in Newry in July 2009. I keep an eye on the web site to stay in touch. I have never stop loving Newry and the people. my email address is pdigby@select.com.au
I hope all is well, take care,

I'm looking for Newry Crawleys. My gg grandfather was John, b1804, his father was Phillip, a maltster. John was a soldier, he married Ellen Gleeson in 1841 and they returned to Newry about 1850 where 4 children were baptised. 3 of them went to Glasgow. Is there anyone from this family out there, please!!! Trish in New Zealand

To Con McCann
Thank you for replying Con; sorry I didn't pick up your message before now. I had a dear friend (sadly now passed to the higher life) who used to tell me stories of the old days in Ireland and the people. They were, indeed, times that no longer exist; people were different then; kinder, considerate and unselfish and Lottie certainly had these attributes. I just wondered if there were any photos of her anywhere and if anyone out there had anything more to say about her. I write, and one day intend to compose a tribute to those lovely people gone but never forgotten.
Lynda.

Congratulations to the Newry Journal for transcribing the list of WWI Newry recruits. My Grandfather Francis MacMahon hailed from Newry. He joined up in 1914, survived the War and some years later emigrated to Australia. I wonder could you have a quick look under 'M' to see if he is listed. His name could be spelled 'MacMahon' or 'McMahon'. Many thanks, Phillip

Hi
I'm not sure if this is the right way to do this but I want to make contact with someone who can help my brother and I spend a pleasant 2/3 hours in Newry. We are 60 plus free bus pass passengers but enjoy a bit of craic.

Can anyone remember the surname of Big Joe the coalman who worked for O'Rourkes in the 50s and 60s? He was a lovely man and also very funny – he often had me in stitches when I worked in Barny Hughes' pub. Here's hoping someone out there knows.

Message to Brian Kinney. Yes, I'm glad to say that I did make contact with your dad in or around Orpington in the late 80s/early 90s. Am I right in thinking he passed away shortly after? All the Kinney brothers were great fellas. I worked with your uncle Peter in Hosford's garage. Thanks for responding to my original post. It's great keeping an eye out for old friends and family.

Dear Editor - I note from your recent entry about the Meadow that you know Kieran Kinney. Kieran is my cousin - his father Paddy was my dad'd brother. We used to live at 58 Derrybeg Drive until about 1962 when we moved to 32 Clanyre Avenue. I am trying to track Charles (Charlie) O'Loughlin a child hood friend who used to live at 34 Clanyre Avenue. I am not sure if his mother, a midwife at the time, is still alive. I lost the details you sent me a few years back. Any clues as to how I might track down Charlie?
Very grateful for any information you can give.

Ed, I am from S Armagh and from a tradition which does not normally display allegiance to any crowned head. However I fully support your publishing the lists of local recruits. Irrespective of their motivation, which could range from staunch loyalty to King & Country, through naievty to pure desperation, they were fellow countrymen. Many of them will have died a horrible death. They deserve to be remembered. Future researchers deserve as many sources of information as possible. This is a fine example of the value of your historical work. Santanta
