Do any of the members know Dessie Sloan, possibly the same man as on the list of Abbey leavers? Or his wife Liz? I had no luck finding them when I went home in 2005, and would love to make contact again.

Tony, my memory tells me you were an excellent Head Boy and certainly did justice to your position. Good job A Meehan or the "risky" guy did not get in. Please see my earlier tribute to Mary O'Hare on this guestbook and to earlier discussions on "Abbey Girls" in the discussions.

While my memory is fading I remember that three names were put forward to the lads in seventh year who then voted. I think Aidan Meehan was one but I cant remember who the other one was. I dont know if at that time I was regarded as a safe pair of hands, maybe I was but I enjoyed being Head Boy and have always believed that I did a good job.
By the way were you one of the seventh year boys in 1968/69. If so perhaps you can get my email from the editor and drop me a line.

Tony Fitzpatrick,
Is it true that you were selected head boy after the headmaster had toyed with the idea of allowing the pupils to elect the head boy? Did they hurriedly abandon the idea when it emerged that a "risky" type was probably going to sweep in on the poll! Were you the safe pair of hands?

to Rebecca: a little puzzled.
If it's Pearl Gamble you refer to: was she your Great-aunt? A sister of Pearl's married a Maxwell, I am told

Re Abbey leavers1969.
I was one of those lads. I am on list under my full name Gerard A Fitzpatrick. I went to work in McCartan&McAteer for over a year and then went to College in Birmingham in October 1970.On my return I went to Dublin to work with my father and brothers in the building industry. In 1975 I joined the Civil Service in Dublin and ended up working for eircom for over 20 years as a senior Manager. Following a bout of ill health in 2003 I retired from eircom but being too young(??) to completely retire I re-entered the Civil Service 30 years after my first entry. I have spent the last three years working in the Asylum Area interviewing Asylum Seekers.
I dont recall getting the item Nitram mentioned but as the Head Boy I was presented with a beautiful Gold Medal which my mother wore for years.
It was great to see the list of lads but as I said in an earlier posting I have hardly seen any of them since we left the school in 1969.
We used to hang with the girls from the Sacred Heart and Our Lady's but again I havent seen many of them since 1969.
I would love to hear from any of the gang from that time.

Earth Walker. I suspect that Rebecca is referring to Pearl Gamble, the victim in the notorious Robert McGladdery murder that occurred at Newry in Jan 1961. The Editor ran a story on that a few weeks back.

Nitram's 1969 list of Abbey leavers was most interesting. I see S Treanor is listed. He may well have picked many trophies since leaving school but does he still have the trophy presented to each Abbey leaver in 1969? It was a "Spirit of extacy" mounted on a square of marble with each leaver's name engraved on the base by Mickie Mallie the lab tech.

Marty, I should have mentioned that the last time I heard of Brian Dilworth was when I seen a mention of him in the Newry Reporter many years ago when he was getting married in Australia and going on honeymoon to the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. Someone in Newry had put it in the paper.

Marty, how could anyone forget Margo - One of the most attractive girls I ever seen in my life. She was Willie girlfriend for a while. By the way I think Willie played harmonica that night with Barths Pot.

Earth Walker,
Kenny Bailie, I don’t know what became of Kenny, but I do know that Davy married Deirdre O’Hare, remember Deirdre, and her cousin from Chicago.
Deirdre’s cousin was called Margo. “Margo from Chicago” we used to say to her, Margo was a dead ringer for Cher, if you don’t remember Margo your Brother Willie certainly will.
Bartholomew’s Jampot, now there is a blast from the past, Noel Moan and big Rondo McManus, we played with them that night, some craic that was.
Brian and Barry Dilworth I don’t know what happened to them after they went to Australia, but I am sure someone out there knows.

Marty: I remember being at school with Kenny & David Bailie but they seem have left Newry many years ago. In fact I think it was around the same time as Brian & Barry Dilworth went to Australia. Noel Moan I remember well especially the night he performed as lead quitarist with Bartholomews Jampot in the Hibs hall, Bessbrook - What a night that was. Do you remember who else played with him that night???

Watcher,
I haven’t been talking to Noel Moan in years; if you happen to bump into him again give him my regards.
The ashtray also has the initials: E.McG,and G.McP, anyone any ideas?
I have also managed to make out the name K Bailie, could this be Davy Bailie's Brother Kenny? They both lived in the Meadow at that time.

namroN,
For sure you are the spook, I think earth walker caught that on. Anyway I have had another look at the said ashtray, and yes you are right, the initials are NM, so we can take it that they stand for Noel Moan. Thanks namroN,and welcome to the Journal.

The black hut with a cable running to earth outside, that was my idea, it worked, didn’t it? Looking back now I think that whole episode was a circuit fault in that crappy old amp that I was using (that was pre Marshal days) but it was more fun to blame Basil, wasn’t it?

Ah ha - Was it Na Ha or No Mo perhaps one of them better known as the Swede that wore the Tweed or even the Sward that wore the Cord. I hear drumming in the background in time to the Trogs - could that be a vital clue. Bending peoples ears was a popular pastime when we used to sit together discussing the heady tones. Memories of the black hut with a cable running outside to Earth us so we did not fry. Nice to hear from you again namroN
