To; Edward Coonagh.
Edward, you are right, my mother's name was Josphine (Josie) and I believe in the very early days in Cecil Street, your aunt Winnie and Josie were the best of friends. I have an old photo graph of them both with Winnie having a dust bin lid on her head tied up in a bow as a hat outside your door.
My friends were Pat Mc Cluskey (Wilsons Row), Grants, "The Ferris's", Mc Guiganns, Peter Mallon (Mad Monk), etc....
I was back in Newry 4 years ago and it still has that special 'feeling'. I live and work in Sydney, Australia. Hoping to retire in the next 5 years, ending up in Newry. My sister Margaret visits regularly. Take care,
Pat

For John Gordon,
I can't help with the names but the quarry owners according to George Henry Bassett's 1886 Co Down directory were,Robert Baird A F Campbell, Jas Toman all in Bailinacraig presumably the quarries around Courtney Hill and Windmill Road.Samuel Cooper Derrylecagh, P Finnegan Glenville, J Mc Collough & Sons Croreagh these may be personal rather than business addresses. Jos Weir Cloughenramer and finally Drumcashlone Granite Quarry was owned by J E Emerson who presumably had offices at Basin Walk as that address appears in the directory.

Just finished reading 'guestbook' and seen so many entries and some poeple i used to know. I lost touch with Charlie Ferris, as I stayed next door with Peggy at 34 Cecil Street. I obviously knew all your family and your mum and dad.
Austin, I hope all's well in your part of the world. Please keep in touch. I am a long way away in Oz and it is great to read this web site and make me feel at home.

When are we going to see the completion of the Albert Basin? Parker Green's vision for this piece of Newry is truly amazing. What about the Bridge at Narrow Water, this would be an excellent Tourist opportunity. Finally, having read some of the sites blogs praise must go to Pat Jenning's for his outstanding contribution to sporting achievements.
CA Murphy
Saw this request for info on Terence Murphy, formerly of Mill street in 1914 **
He was my grandfather and moved to Monaghan Street where he and my father (Terry) ran a pub until 1982.

Has anyone any photographs of the Old Newry Street League Teams. St.Marys, St.Patrick's, St Brigids etc. Great teams and great days
Joe Hannah
Hi,
I read a couple of entries by a Bill Hanna and think we may be related.
My Great Grandfather was Abraham Hanna born around 1860 in Down. My guess is that Bill's grandfather William James would have been a nephew to my Great Grandfather Abraham. My Abraham left down and moved to Scotland and first appears in the 1881 Scotland Census living in Annbank with a wife - Margaret nee Docharty and a daughter Ellen. Most of the family later left for Ontario Canada in 1905. My grandfather, Matthew, remained in Scotland. Hoping someone can put me in touch with Bill as we can perhaps share family history.
