Tina, A google search threw up something on the "Irish Forestry Society" with one of the former members being EBM Chambre Dungannon. That might link in with my ref below and also chimes with a childhood memory that the trees around the Chambre house were planted to mimic the battle lines at Waterloo?

Tina, I did not know the Chambres but I did know a fascinating lady who was a close friend of a Mrs Chambre (which one I am not sure. The lady in question died about five years ago aged about 90 years. Her father worked on the ralway at the start of the 20th century. This lady travelled from Dundalk to the Model school in the early part of the 20th century. She later lived at Goraghwood station. Her life was incredible and spanned Ireland, Africa and Britain. She had letters from Mrs Chambre right up to Mrs Chambre's death somewhere like Dungannon or Enniskillen.

Re Abbey Boys
My misstake in my earlier message. Gerard O Hare is in the third row/ The lad beside Art Mc Logan is Jim Turley. Tommy is his brother.
As an aside I remember Art Mc Logan and myself throwing the shot putt for the Abbey in Belfast at the inter school sports. Donal McCaul was a handy footballer.

Re: Abbey Boys.
I think Gerard O Hare is the man in the second row. I believe he went to Dublin to work as an engineer in the ESB

Re Abbey Boys 2nd Row Right is Raymond Campbell, son of Eddie (The Sheriff) Campbell (RIP),former Mentor of the Newry United Junior Cup winning side of the early 60's. I believe Raymond is currently residing in the Downpatrick area.

On the discussion pages of this site there is an entry under the heading "Foggy Dew" which sends the reader via Google to "sam and jack and rupert brooke". It is directly related to the two young Newry men referred to below. It leads you to a short poem and a moving article published earlier in the Belfast Telegraph. I recommend you Google it and a thanks to B Dodds

Many thanks to Brian Dodds whose moving submission has again brought an earler article to life, as if by magic. And ironically, by noting the death of two of his own ancestors.

Today is the 90th anniversary of the Connemara disaster, told here under History, Maritime, 1916 Shipping Disaster. Read it now and remember!

Hi The Fonze! I'll be in Newry over Christmas, and think your suggestion is a great one. I don't know whether or not it's been done before, but I think the notion of a Journalers' get-together is a fantastic idea. Anybody on the ground locally prepared to set something up? I'd love it to happen, and so would my acquaintance Jasper Cucumber and a couple of others. What about a jar or two in Doyles or The Bridge?

Theo.

Less than 8 weeks to Christmas now. Can't wait to have a few drinks around those old haunts and see some faces I haven't seen since last Christmas! Sure the craic will be mighty. Might even bump into some fellow Journalers.

I have mentioned my old pal Theo Patterson on Meadow Memories. I neglected to mention he was a twin, Angela being his sister. Sadly Angela passed away, suffering from cancer, just two weeks ago. The whole family, and Theo in particular, wish to record their gratitude and thanks to the exemplery staff of Daisy Hill Hospital - Female Medical Ward, nursing, domestic and ancilliary.

I wish to add my voice to that too. Also, my heartfelt condolences to Theo, his wife Tina and the wider Patterson family on their great loss.

Thre's a great big plastic spider free with "The Beano" this week. You squeeze a bulb on an attached tube and the spider jumps about! Nobody who wants to be anybody should be without one... I've got mine!

Is there a list of residents of Collins Row in the 1920's on the site? I have found the Flanagans and the picture of a house but would like other names if possible.

The ed's craic about freebies in comics, anyone ut there ever keep and preserve these wonderous things!
I remember the plastic submarines out of Rice Krispies using soda powder.
I do remember those banger things, dangerous to have around anyone who had no sense of humour in the adult world.
There were the flying wheelie/round plastic things propelled by elastic that flew up into the air of a stick? Any more freebies from times past

Again I appeal to new 'members' to include their real email address, so I can confirm, by sending them an email, that they are for real - and not selling porn, gambling, Vaigra etc on line. Otherwise, I cannot accept new members. Our whole site is in imminent peril from thse horrible people!
