I
have just received my invitation to purchase Season Tickets for the 54th
Newry Drama Festival which runs from
Friday 24th March until Saturday 1st April 2006.
There
is no list of the companies participating addended though it’s a fair bet that
most of the old favourites will be included. Here are the plays, in the order in which they will appear:
Juno
and the Paycock by Sean O’Casey
Kindertransport
Humble
Boy
Rebecca
Murder
in the Cathedral by T S Eliot
The
Drawer Boy
Da
by Hugh Leonard
Lady
in the Van by Alan Bennett
Blood
Brothers by Willy Russell
Season
Tickets are £30 – just over £3 a night and thus represent fantastic value. Newpoint's offering is on Tuesday evening and is the classic Eliot play Murder in the Cathedral about the life and death of Thomas a Becket.
A little birdie tells me some members wanted it staged in Newry Cathedral. It has been done before elsewhere and since the drama is very much pro-Church - and is mirrored in more recent Church affairs in Latin America - would have been well-received by a much wider audience than it normally plays to. An opportunity missed on all sides. Still, others would beg to differ.
I fully expect my friend and director Sean Trainor to surprise and delight with his interpretation. I wish the troupe the best of luck!
