It was almost a century ago. 1908 to be precise. Here are a few news headline snippets, month by month.



22 February Great damage was caused by a huge storm. Among the public buildings                         affected was the Dominican Church’s spire.
 

7 March The Newry steamer ‘The Orier’ – sailing out of Newport for Belfast, foundered with the loss of all hands

 

14 March     There was a fire at Fennell’s Mills

 

16 April     Newry Wanderers won the Newell Cup

 

8 June     Warrenpoint Baths was opened by Captain Roger Hall

 

19 July A young woman was cut to pieces on the Warrenpoint railway

 

29 July     Two men were injured by a runaway goods train at Goraghwood

 

14 August Mr Terence Rice appointed ‘gas collector’ on the death of William Eakin

 

7 September     Rev A S Lyons killed on the railway at Goraghwood

 

2 November     William M Cronin was elected Town Clerk in succession to Robert Hogg                          Doherty
