We would like to record our sincere regret on the passing of John Macan of Australia and offer our deepest sympathies to Annette his wife, to the children and all the extended family of our friend John who died suddenly, after a brief diagnosis of leukemia and coronary heart disease, on 28th July.

John was by far our longest ‘serving’ Journaller who contributed much original work (both written and photographic) to these pages.

Many of the themes closest to our heart were reflected too in John’s work.  He called by Newry to visit when he was here a few years ago, engaged on family research.  I was privileged to give him and his dear wife a conducted tour of Newry and South Armagh.

John was also an author of note and his book on the Macans is still available for perusal in Newry’s Reference Library.

I am devastated – and can only guess at the shock of his nearest and dearest.

May he rest in peace.
