We hope our occasional series on the O’Hanlons through the ages may have inspired some to pursue their own family history.



This final piece draws a line from the most famous personage of recent centuries, Redmond O’Hanlon up to the mid-nineteenth century. Family history records at PRONI, National Registers, the Internet and the Mormon Centre take over from this point. Happy hunting!

Pedigree of Redmond O’Hanlon

 

We have told the story of Redmond, known as Count by his admirers, who was born near Poyntzpass to Loughlin O’Hanlon who had other issue:

 

2 Loughlin O’Hanlon, who was shot by one John Mullen in December 1681: the latter was paid £50 for his foul deed

 

3 Edmond Ban who was recorded alive in May 1681

 

4 John

 

Count Redmond O’Hanlon had issue

 

1 James of Killeavy

 

2 Catherine, who married David Conyaghan of Letterkenny, by whom she had issue

 

 Redmond Conyaghan, who married Martha Ellis of Philadelphia

 

 Mary, who married the Rev Thomas Plunkett

 

 Catherine, who married James Baxter

 

 Daughter, married David Stewart and has descendants in Baltimore

 

James O’Hanlon of Killeavy (above) married and had issue:

 

1 Terence, born Killeavy, later of Mount Bagenal, County Louth, who had a son

 

 James O’Hanlon of Mount Bagenal (d 1789) who married

 

(a)  Anne Morran (Ronan?) of Dublin by whom he had a daughter Catherine who married Thomas Dolan of Ranelagh, Dublin, by whom she had i Terence Thomas Dolan, who married: ii John Dolan who died unmarried, and iii Catherine Dolan, a Carmelite Nun at Ranelagh

 

(b) Alice Coleman of Dundalk and had further issue –

 

 Neale O’Hanlon of Mount Bagenal who married Anne Magee of Newry and had issue:

 1 James of Mount Bagenal, B.L. b. 1812, died unmarried January 1851

 

              2 Terence, died unmarried
 

   3 Eliza who married Matthew Martin and had a daughter Mary Joseph Martin who married John William Horan, Clerk of the Crown and Peace Officer for County Louth and Drogheda, by whom she had a son, Neale William Horan who died in infancy in 1849 – and three daughters

 

   4 Mary Anne, who married James Gernon of Willville, by whom she had a daughter Mary Gernon of Newry who died unmarried.
