1766 Hilltown Church was erected for the parish of Clonduff in place of the one destroyed in 1641

1779 Formation of the Irish Volunteers



1780 The town of Warrenpoint consisted of two houses and a few fishermen’s huts

1789 Newry’s Old Chapel was built

1791 Defenders formed. United Irishmen too

1795 Orange Order formed

1798 Rebellion in Down

1803 Robert Emmett’s rebellion in Dublin: in Down Thomas Russell attempted rebellion: Russell, Drake and Corry tried and executed

1814 Rostrevor Church erected

1819 St Mary’s Church in Newry erected at a cost of £12,500 : St Patrick’s Church repaired

1825 Warrenpoint Church erected

1829  Newry Cathedral completed: St Clare’s Convent founded when Poor Clares came to Newry
