The court was 'in camera'. The magistrate adopted his sternest tone. ‘Is it true,’ he asked the young woman in the dock, ‘that on the 5^th of April last, you were observed on the roof-rack of a Toyota Avensis speeding through the town in a snowstorm, making love to a one-legged dwarf who was wearing only one Wellington boot?’ There was a few seconds of total silence. Finally the girl coughed, and then spoke. ‘What was that date again?’
