Malachy Frame: Trumpet

I had never even heard of a piccolo trumpet before Malachy Frame played one for us at the Young Musicians Platform recently as part of Newry Chamber Music.

Malachy is a 16-year old student at Methodist College Belfast and studies the trumpet with Patrick McCarthy of the Ulster Orchestra.

He is principal trumpet with the City of Belfast Youth Orchestra, with whom, this summer he toured Italy and Slovenia and performed as soloist.

He has been principal trumpet with the Ulster Youth Orchestra since 2007 and has played with the National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ireland.

In 2008 he gained a place in the National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Great Britain and has performed with them in major concert halls in the UK, most recently at the BBC Proms 2009 at the Royal Albert Hall.

In 2008 Malachy was invited to take part in a masterclass with Alison Balsom at the Clandeboye International Festival and in August of this year he attended a master class with Crispian Steele-Perkins at the Charles Wood Summer School.
