Corr’s Sweet Shop

June 3, 2020May 14, 2008 by John McCullagh

From the time that I had enough teeth to deal with a caramel, there was a sweet shop next door to our school. It was run by the Corr’s family.

It was also our Carmel‘s (Hunter) local sweet shop for she indeed lived just a few doors away adjacent to St Joseph‘s School.

Biddy Magee

As I intimated earlier, my Primary 2 year is a blank in my memory, probably because it was fear-free.

Biddy Magee, the Primary 3 teacher was a different proposition.

Lily McCaul

Lily McCaul was a truly extraordinary woman. I knew her through her children, through U3A and through the Gateway. I also interviewed her for Newry Journal. Like thousands of others, I mourn her passing.

Clanrye Avenue people of old

June 3, 2020May 6, 2008 by John McCullagh
clanryeave22.jpg

We explained before how the Meadow houses are numbered out of sequence in a number of roads.

When we got in trouble with the law as youths we would give a seemingly correct address – such as 25 Slieve Gullion Road – which didn’t in fact exist, but they were not to know that!

Eventually in Primary One we got round to the serious business of reading.

Up to that time it had supposedly been reading preparation though if the truth be told, we were far too busy eluding the grasping fingers of Sister Hairpull to bother with much else.

Settling in to School

June 3, 2020April 30, 2008 by John McCullagh

Somehow or other I made it through that first day.

To be fair to her, the nun behaved herself reasonably well and managed to make it through the whole first day without assaulting a single ‘baby infant’.

Sacred Heart 1966: Miss Egan 1

June 3, 2020April 29, 2008 by John McCullagh

This photo of Sacred Heart Girls 1966 includes the donor Mary (Kane) Cuthbertson (or rather the second half – to follow – will!) and we are grateful for it.   No one remembers all their old classmates’ names but Mary has done her best.   The other half is to come and then I will reproduce a smaller version of the joined photos.

Early nuns’ experience

June 3, 2020April 27, 2008 by John McCullagh
ForkhillBus.jpg

It is less than a kilometre from The Meadow to St Joseph‘s School in Edward Street but the bus stopped and re-started several times as other kids climbed on board. It was my first ever trip on a bus and I was excited. I thought the journey would never end.

My thanks to old friend and Meadow man Mark Byrne (formerly of Ballinlare Gardens, now living with his wife (daughter of Peter and Phyllis McCann of Derrybeg Drive) and children in California, who sent me an encouraging email this week.
