Foothills of the Mournes

A single light at Cranfield beams across the sand

In turning guides the ships into the bay

Greencastle guards the entrance

With mountains on each side

The lights ashore whisper

‘Here’s a place to stay’.

The peace and solitude I found

By the foothills of the Mournes

The sea air and the colours fill my soul

To see it is to love it

To feel it is divine

It’s a little peace of heaven

Everyone can hold.

I stood on sand awash with shells

Along Killowen Point

And watched my ship sail stately

Past Greenore

My berth and bunk are empty

My locker box is closed

It’s here I’m gonna stay

For ever more.

No more no more echo seabirds on the wing

As silently I wave my past away

The sorrow of leaving

But the joy of having found

My home and my heart lies

Near Binnian and the bay.

The peace and solitude I found

By the foothills of the Mourne

The sea air and the colours fill my soul

To see it is to love it

To feel it is divine

It’s a little peace of heaven

Everyone can hold.
