By the time I went looking for Austin Golding in the Foresters last evening he was already off home, merry as a lord. So I had to enlist the help of Tony McKevitt in naming the footballers below! My former classmate and pal Austin Golding, who is an avid reader and who returns often to visit Newry, sent me a few photos which I reproduce here. Wouldn’t it be great if Austin could join the rest of the eejits in the CWC in that gathering in October ? It is with great sadness and regret that I announce the death of Mr. Eamon Benedict (Benny) Hughes, one of Newry’s great ‘High Street’ characters. Ben died following a short illness at Daisy Hill hospital on Sunday 21st March. Not all of this letter was read at Mass yesterday to the faithful attending. In addition all deserve the chance to analyse in full the Papal response to the present crisis of abusing priests and religious. Sacred Heart Grammar 2006 14A : Where did the A Level students come from ? Where did they go ? Very busy recently. Lunched today with the Quigleys, their distinguished Swedish guest Hakan and Friends of Newry Chamber Orchestra! Last evening’s concert was excellent, as always. Lislea’s home performance the previous evening likewise. Now back to business! US officials are investigating how a child was apparently allowed to direct planes at New York’s JFK airport – one of the country’s busiest. Newry Chamber Music have been invited to hold their Spring Concert in the Sandys Street Presbyterian Church on Thursday next, 11 March at 8.00 pm. If you haven’t yet purchased a season ticket for Lislea Drama Festival tickets will be available on opening night which is this Saturday, when, as we have reviewed, Ardagh Players present “Thy Will Be Done”. Meanwhile to continue with our advanced previews … There was another photo of the same era with some of the same gymnasts and Gerry Brown, that appeared in Cuisle na nGael many years ago. I must dig it out later. Meanwhile here is the second part as promised. Regular reader Gerry Hobden found a photo in an old newspaper clipping that featured himself and some friends of old. The quality is poor so I divided the picture in two: the second will follow. For most of the forty years we have been together my wife and I have attended the Newry Drama Festival each Spring. By May 1595 – almost two years into what would become known in Irish history as the Nine Years War – the relief of the Monaghan garrison had become crucial for the Crown forces. The Victoria Lock gates soon opened and, on a swell of escaping water we sailed into the sea estuary. That Team with Austin Golding
