Murder in Cathedral, in Cathedral!

Just getting ready to go to tonight’s performance at the Newry Amateur Drama Festival ‘Rebecca’ but I had to share the good news with you!!

Yes!! Tomorrow evening’s performance will be staged at Newry Cathedral! Ironically, though this was what was first mooted here on Newry Journal, it has happened only because of

A. Bishop John McAreavey’s generous invitation

B. The ‘pensions’ strike by public sector workers which denied the use of the Town Hall tomorrow evening anyway.

We are fully behind the protesting workers and will support them during the day.

‘Murder in the Cathedral’ by T S Eliot tells of the hounding of a righteous priest (Bishop) and finally his murder of the steps of the altar in Westminster Cathedral. It was a Church V corrupt state issue and certainly no harm can come from availing of our own Cathedral for its staging by our local amateur group.

I sympathise with all concerned regarding acoustics, the erection of props, stage, lighting etc. and the adjudication of the event. Mr Colin Dollie will have his work cut out to adjudicate this event! The good news is that Newpoint have already earned the points to get to the Ulster (Belfast) Finals and All-Ireland (Athlone) Finals.

When word gets out this will be a sell-out. Arrive early to ensure you are not seated behind one of the famous granite pillars!

Good luck to Sean and his magnificent players and back-room boys and girls!
