In response to our tribute to the late Michael Gallagher, we have been inundated with people’s recollections of the shop in North Street.  Our regular contributor Patrick J White, formerly of O’Neill Avenue sent us a few photos which we are happy to reproduce here.

In Patrick’s own words …

‘Here is a photo of my cousin Mary Fitzpatrick nee White, as she looked when working in Gallagher’s shop in North Street.

Mary was from Bessbrook and lived with our family in North Street.  Mary married Anthony Fitzpatrick from High Street.

Eugene and Michael Gallagher often stopped to visit our family in Church Street on their way to and from checking on the cattle on the Bullet Road.’

Again in Patrick’s words ….

‘That is my sister Betty leaning over the garden wall of Church Street talking to a young Eugene Gallagher.  Betty now lives in Oklahoma, U. S. A.

Michael Gallagher sewed a lovely crest of Newry on a green jacket for me, the last time I visited Newry. We had a great chat about old North Street.

I will wear my green jacket to the Celtic Club here this day week on St Patrick’s  Day,  in proud memory of a first-class person and tradesman.’

There is nothing more to be said!
