Glassdrummond Households

For some time we have concentrated on the Crossmaglen area. Before we leave, we would like to list family names common historically in this area using the below listed sources – all, of course in their time, designed to extract maximum amounts from the locals for the planter and the English in exile. For us, of course, they are an invaluable source of local and family history research!

O’Fiach and Blanket Men

I recently read one of Brian Moore’s last books, Lies of Silence, the title referring to Westminster’s silence on the injustices perpetrated on the Catholic minority in the Northern statelet where Moore was reared (before he emigrated to North America).

Midsummer Music

I promised to give you plenty of advance notice of Newry Chamber Music’s midsummer event at Lislea Community Centre (Directions ?  Through Camlough, round the Lake, up Sturgan Brae and 3 km on).

Distillery Workers of old?

The photo below was unearthed from family archives.  Joe Larkin (top right) was a great grandfather of my wife.  We think they all worked in the Distillery in Dominic Street.

Thanks to Watcher – and Santanta – for bringing this story to our attention.  It deserves a wider airing and I have lifted the following Independent obituary, by Rupert Cornwall off the Internet for your benefit.

In my notes about my Devlin and Boyle Grandparents, I make some passing references to cousins, of which there were seventy-four, including my five sisters and me.

Penultimate Army Lists

Quite a number of our fellow townspeople have names beginning with “T”.  These are the ‘T’ men from here who served in the Great War …

Old Point Bands

With the coming of Easter and Spring, my mind was turning to Sunday afternoons in P J O’Hares in Carlingford and the Four Pennies … then to the Point Bands of old!  Here are a few ….

Equus

Of my lifetime of attending Newry Drama Festival, two plays in particular stand out, Agnes of God and Equus.  Tonight is the first return of the latter and it is performed by one of the best societies in Ireland, Silken Thomas of Kildare!

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Tonight’s play at the Newry Drama Festival is the evergreen One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – this year performed by Omagh, was a highly successful film and Broadway Play and was formerly presented in Newry under the great Sean Hollywood.

Quite a few prominent Newry names are included here, including many Ruddys, Rodgers (forebears of Dickie, I believe) Rooneys, Reillys and many more.
