Newpoint: ‘The Field’

Newpoint’s latest offering kicks off tomorrow (Wednesday) night week (30th Sept) in the Town Hall at 8.00pm.  Charlie Smyth presents the John B Keane favourite ‘The Field’.

Wollworths Staff of the 1950s

In the week that the former site of much-loved store Woolworths reopens as two clothes stores, I think it is appropriate to recall some of the Newry people who worked there forty or more years ago!

A Little Bush

A little dated, perhaps – but worth a run, I think – especially since the poet was an old classmate of mine!

Thirty years old now!

The occasion in 1985 was my daughter Judith’s seventh birthday party.  Besides my son (back, right) I recognise only Sarah (with balloon), daughter of Dear Ed and mother of Naomi.

Occasionally we feature a school year group from the past and wonder/reflect on what role in life each former pupil plays today. For the latter, we are heavily dependent on our readership. Please fill in the blanks below by emailing the answers to us.

Downshire Court

I have had a few friends recently enquire about this long demolished street in town.  The lady in the picture below may have been going home that day in 1953 – or perhaps taking a short-cut to Hill Street through the Cathedral grounds.

Today we will be catching up with events at our finest Festival, Fiddlers Green with, first, the lunchtime Concert at the Kilbroney Arms.   Then at the weekend we will choose from the programme below, of the Tom Dunne Society.

Lucia Welsh’s 60th Birthday

Just about everyone in the town knows Lucia Welsh so it was a great privelege and honour to be among those invited to share her birthday celebration – first at a Mass celebrated in St Clare’s Chapel by her brother Fr Oscar Welsh, and then at the home of her aunt Tara McIntyre.

Intimations of Immortality

Dear Santanta: beset as you clearly are this summer morn with intimations of mortality, I thought perhaps … Wordsworth’s Ode, Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood … ?

this is just the first stanza …

Jenny’s Triangle found!

It is little wonder that the baby in the photo below is so goggle-eyed!  Is he thinking – ‘wow!  I’d like to bury my head in those!’   Well, not really.  The mystery is solved in the second photo.
