Just outside I pulled on my helmet in an attempt to hide my western features as there was a large crowd gathering just down the road where a convoy of trucks had stopped.  Having no other choice I headed straight for the crowd and made my way through.

The Harvest of Old (1)

I watched a youth last autumn single-handedly sweep – like Tornado Katrina’s landfall on the Mississippi delta – through a few fields in the Lislea district of my beloved South Armagh, and I pondered upon progress.  It put me in mind of Thomas’s poem, Cyndylan on a Tractor.

Militias on the Loose

It was now a few days before the end of the month and an increasing amount of vehicles were arriving in the town from over the border. Strangely enough not only had they household equipment but it looked like they had everything on board from roofing sheets to the kitchen sink.

St Joseph’s Class of ’65

The Reunion of St Joseph’s High School Newry – Class of 1965 – was held recently in the Canal Court Hotel. The function was attended by the present Principal, Mr Hugh Mallon and the guest speaker was recently-retired St Joseph‘s teacher Mr Sean McGuigan.

Skinning Rabbits

Jack McCulla walked slowly down Bagnall Street feeling ashamed and angry with himself.   He had raised the darkie boy’s hopes and disappointed him immediately.   He’d wanted so much to be nice to him as well.   Ever since the boy had arrived, he had looked unhappy.

Lurgan Mercy House

Sarah was the youngest Russell girl. She became Sister Emmanuel. In 1866 she was sent as Superior, along with four other Sisters, to open a branch house in Lurgan, then a thriving manufacturing town.
