The nineteenth century Parliamentary Gazetter – looking back on the previous century – recorded that in 1766 the first significant building in Hilltown – the Episcopalian Church – was erected near Eight Mile Bridge ‘at the joint expense of Wills, Earl of Hillsborough, and the late Board of First Fruits’.
Pat McGinn, the Mayor of Newry and Mourne is hosting a reception for myself (John McCavitt) and some colleagues who have collaborated on an innovative narrative and song CD about the Flight of the Earls.
The McCavitts of Derrybeg Park are a formidable family indeed in the recent history of Newry. Eileen, the mother has sadly passed on but Dominic is still your friendly, perennial Man About Town. Their children have given them great cause for pride.

Next weekend (Fri-Sun 17-19 June) features the re-launch of Ti Chulainn Centre, Mullaghbawn with an official Opening Ceremony at 7.30 on Friday evening followed by a buffet supper and a traditional session with award-winning musicians promised.
