This photo of Sacred Heart Girls 1966 includes the donor Mary (Kane) Cuthbertson (or rather the second half – to follow – will!) and we are grateful for it.   No one remembers all their old classmates’ names but Mary has done her best.   The other half is to come and then I will reproduce a smaller version of the joined photos.

Early nuns’ experience

It is less than a kilometre from The Meadow to St Joseph‘s School in Edward Street but the bus stopped and re-started several times as other kids climbed on board. It was my first ever trip on a bus and I was excited. I thought the journey would never end.

Last man to hang for murder

It was almost two weeks after the murder, before McGladdery, who was continually being followed, cracked and led the police inadvertently to the scene of the septic tank just a few hundred yards from his home where he had secreted the blood-stained missing clothes and other items from the murder scene.

Mrs Gamble gets dreadful news

Detective Sergeant Robert Knox testified that on January 28th (only hours after the murder) at 9.45 am he went to Pearl Gamble’s home with Head Constable O’Hara and other police.

It was the single most dreadful moment in Mrs Gamble’s life.

McGladdery buys murder weapon

Woman Constable Elizabeth Ann McCance testified that she was on duty in plain clothes in Newry Town early on the day of Pearl Gamble’s murder when she saw McGladdery and a friend shopping at the hardware counter at Wollworths.
