The Reunion of St Joseph’s High School Newry – Class of 1965 – was held recently in the Canal Court Hotel. The function was attended by the present Principal, Mr Hugh Mallon and the guest speaker was recently-retired St Joseph‘s teacher Mr Sean McGuigan.

Skinning Rabbits

Jack McCulla walked slowly down Bagnall Street feeling ashamed and angry with himself.   He had raised the darkie boy’s hopes and disappointed him immediately.   He’d wanted so much to be nice to him as well.   Ever since the boy had arrived, he had looked unhappy.

Elizabeth’s Role

Mother Aquin suffered her first bout of illness in 1864 and really never fully recovered. When well enough, she taught in the school and periods of remission were filled with good and useful works.

Sarah was the youngest Russell girl. She became Sister Emmanuel. In 1866 she was sent as Superior, along with four other Sisters, to open a branch house in Lurgan, then a thriving manufacturing town.

Marriage Customs of Old

A century ago marriages were much more lively affairs especially in country districts. It practically entailed a holiday for the younger people of the immediate district.

Cannibalism in Newry

DerryleckaMill.jpg

In the aftermath of Kinsale (1601) – in which battle over 1200 Irish were slaughtered and decapitated even in flight – Sir Arthur Chichester advocated a ruthless policy across the country of spoilation, terror and destruction that before long became the policy of Mountjoy’s forces. In places where Chichester himself played a part, the scenes of horror unleashed were particularly gruesome. The Newry area suffered grievously.

Newry & Rostrevor Convents

At the invitation of Bishop Blake, a group of Mercy Sisters set out from Kinsale on 26 June 1855, with the object of establishing a Convent in Newry. They were led by Sr. Catherine O’Connor and included Newry girl and novice Elizabeth Russell.

Darwin Awards 2005

martindebating.jpg

Named for the father of evolution Charles Darwin, the Darwin Awards commemorate those who are public-spirited (or foolish!) enough to improve our common gene pool by the simple expedient of removing themselves from it.

This year’s easy winner was James Eliot.

When his .38-calibre revolver failed to fire at his intended victim during a hold-up in Long Beach, California, would-be robber James Elliot did something that can only inspire wonder.

He peered down the barrel and tried the trigger again.

This time it worked…

Abbey of Viride Lignum

The Cistercian Monastery at Newry was established before the arrival of conquering Norman knights here toward the end of the twelfth century. However the separation of Church and State is a modern phenomenon and it was politic for those who wished to wield influence to endow the Church with lands and property.

EarthWalker: Danger threatens

The westerly city was a welcome place after a long hard motorcycle ride but even more so when you had just suffered a serious act of violence and survived.  I met up with my associates and told them the story from the very beginning but they looked at me in disbelief.

Four: Earth Walker

Approximately a week later I made my way as usual into town for something to eat and my normal tipple. By 22:00 I was ready to go home so I donned my “Dry as a Bone” and buttoned it up to the neck as it is fairly chilly riding motorcycle at that time of night.

Part Three: Walker

I returned back to my border town in the mountains a few days later but with a completely different perceptive on the place that I had called home for the past few years.

Bushwacked by Annie Oakley

Lamplight.jpg

It was a night in the summer of 1958 when I was nine years of age of which I write.

With my cousin Brian Dean I emerged from the Frontier Cinema at the end of the ‘First House’.  It was about 8.30 p.m. and there was – what to us was –  a very intriguing-looking female of about fourteen or fifteen years of age standing at the William Street corner.

Flight of the Earls: McCavitt

The McCavitts of Derrybeg Park are a formidable family indeed in the recent history of Newry. Eileen, the mother has sadly passed on but Dominic is still your friendly, perennial Man About Town. Their children have given them great cause for pride.
